Of course. Special education means your child gets extra support tailored to his needs. It could be extra time on tests, a smaller class, or one-on-one help with reading. First, we do an evaluation to see what support he needs.

It is very low-key. A specialist will work with him one-on-one through games, puzzles, and simple questions. It feels more like play than a test. It usually takes two to three sessions over a couple of weeks.

We create an Individualized Education Program, called an IEP. It is a plan that outlines his goals and the support he will receive. You will be part of the team that designs it — parents are essential to the process.

Don't be nervous — you are the expert on your child. The team will present the evaluation results, discuss your son's strengths and challenges, and propose goals. You can ask questions at any time and suggest changes.

Absolutely. You have every right to disagree, ask for modifications, or request additional services. Nothing gets finalized without your signature. You can also bring an advocate or translator if that helps.

We formally review the IEP once a year, but you can request a meeting anytime if you have concerns. His teachers will also send home progress reports every quarter so you can track how he is doing.
