Part A covers hospital stays and is usually free if you paid Medicare taxes for at least ten years. Part B covers doctor visits and outpatient services — the standard premium is about one hundred and seventy-four dollars per month. Part D covers prescription drugs and is optional but recommended.

Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, is an alternative offered by private insurance companies. It bundles Part A, Part B, and usually Part D together, often with extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing. Some plans have zero additional premiums.
